Bonanza Community Center Feasibility Study

For decades the Bonanza community has entertained the idea of having their own community center.  Bonanza Cares believes the time is right to begin discussions again.  They believe the community would greatly benefit from a center focused on youth, seniors and community projects.  Bonanza Cares applied for, and received, a grant from The Ford Family Foundation to conduct a feasibility study.  This grant has allowed Bonanza Cares to hire a consultant to help determine if the time is right.  Part of the study includes a community survey, which is being mailed to 1248 households in the greater Bonanza and Dairy areas.  Everyone over the age of 13 is encouraged to fill out a separate survey.  Because those living in Beatty and Bly will likely use a community center in Bonanza, they are encouraged to pick up surveys at the Bonanza General Store, Soup to Nuts, or the Big Springs Market and fill them out; or complete the survey online.  All of the instructions are included in the survey.  There is a separate survey for businesses and organizations.  The deadline to submit all surveys is August 25th.

Beginning in September, Community Confluence Consulting will be meeting with various Businesses, groups, agencies, and organizations to discuss the idea of a center in Bonanza; gauging their interest in using the facility and their potential support.  All of the information gathered, in addition to the survey results, will be compiled into a report and presented to the community during the Bonanza Cares Annual Open House in January 2020.

Being able to operate a community center year after year is a great concern.  The Bonanza Cares board of directors has toured four community centers in Southern Oregon to learn what features they offer their communities and how they are able to continue operations.  So far they have learned that there are amenities, events, and grants that could bring in a sizable income; but ultimately, if the community wants a center, they will need to support it.  Support could be through donations, annual membership fees, programs, costs for services, or volunteering.  A community center will belong to the community and with that comes some responsibility.  This study will allow Bonanza Cares to hear straight from the people and decide whether or not the community wants to move forward.

Come early to get your seats! Mayor Gary Zieg and Ryan Bartholomew, President of the Malin Historical Society, will conduct the tour. Gary and Ryan will be doing a presentation on Malin’s past, present and future plans. The bus will travel past the Fire Department (Former Malin Elementary School) and show you the current Elementary School on 3rd St where the former Malin High School was located. It will then turn on Rosicky Avenue so you can see the Industrial area that includes Circle C Marketing, Baley-Trotman Farms, and Winema Elevators. The City of Malin received a “Patent” from the government in 1948 for land to build a public airport. The airport was very active.  Pilots sprayed local crops from the 1940’s to present day. Its current use is more for recreational flying. In 2012 the airport was renamed in memory of WW11 Pilot Ehle H Reber, a local hero of Malin. Reber and his crew gave the ultimate sacrifice to our great nation on January 23, 1943,  during his seventh mission over Lorient, France. The tour will show you the airport and the memorial in honor of those that serviced in the military.

The tour will then travel back into the downtown area of Malin where Gary and Ryan will showcase the current businesses and update you on the current happenings! You will have an opportunity to check out the museum, Broadway Theater, Way Station (former Broadway Hall/ skating rink-dance hall) and view the veteran’s park.

Hope you can come enjoy hearing about our wonderful community!

Malin’s 110th Year Celebration

The City of Malin, along with Malin Park, will be celebrating their 110th year of the City and 75th year of the park on July 3-7, 2019.  Historically, this event has drawn thousands of people from Oregon, California, Washington and Idaho; and this year should prove to be no exception.

As Malin celebrates its 110th anniversary and Malin Park celebrates it’s 75th anniversary as Oregon’s very first park district, there are a series of events scheduled for July 3-7.

Events will commence July 3rd with the Malin Royal Firecrackers Pageant, hosted by the Malin Community Service Club.  The Malin Royal Firecrackers is a program developed to instill, within our elementary-aged youth, the idea to give back to the community through community service projects.  This is their 2nd year of being celebrated as a group who serves the community.

Celebrations continue on July 4th with a merchant breakfast, swap meet, parade, 26th Annual Show-N-Shine Car Show, raffle, live music in the park, and a dynamic fireworks show at dusk.

July 5th begins with Historical and Agricultural Tours, a matinee at the Broadway Theater, museum hours from 4-8pm, and Downtown Cruise Night and Street Dance/Concert in the Park with the Kurt Van Meter Band from 6-10pm.

July 6th events start with the 1st Annual Disc-Golf Tournament, Historical and Agricultural Tours, Free Lunch at Noon talent show All Class Reunion, Czech music, Beer Garden, and fun games and activities for the kids.

A collaborative effort between the City of Malin, Malin Park, Rural Klamath Connects and Discover Klamath for marketing is underway.  Details regarding this event can be found by calling 541-723-2021, or by visiting the City of Malin website at www.cityofmalin.org.
